‘Softcore’ and ‘Cloned’

The Crocus Gallery invites you to their coming solo exhibitions ‘Softcore’ and ‘Cloned’. This is the follow up exhibition from the Crocus Open 3 (November 2012) of which Shaylor and Sparrow were winners. The private view will be from 6-9pm on the 28 th April.

In the front gallery Lucy Sparrow will display a collection of textiles pieces ranging from sculpture to tapestries which aim to challenge the taboos of society in a light hearted, comical way. The back gallery will feature a film by Tracie Shaylor which addresses the blurring effect of new technologies on our perceptions and minds.

Based in Brighton, Lucy Sparrow works mainly with felt and wool to create soft, oversized sculptures which take a step back from the pressure on artists to create something deep and monumental. Instead, her works comes across as light-hearted and thoroughly enjoyable for its dreamlike qualities combined with a critique of contemporary issues. In this exhibition she will introduce the issue of Anorexia in her own life. ‘A series of ethereal and often mystical tapestries that convey the feeling of isolation and complete separation that the disease puts upon the sufferer’, The Art of Falling Apart is just one element of Sparrow’s extensive show.

Tracie Shaylor presents ‘Cloned’, a short film of four minutes that takes clips from Youtube combined with the artists own filming to raise awareness of the growing interference of technology within our lives, the growing search for human development and changing ideas of Utopia. She states, “science and technology have not only transformed the lives and expectations of Western populations, their influence is increasingly becoming global and among the seductive images and serious agendas is a maze of philosophical and moral dilemmas”.

This will be the final exhibition hosted by The Crocus Gallery as it is currently known. We will be vacating the Lenton premises after this exhibition and will hence forth function as the Omni Creative. This is a new chapter for us, not the end.

‘Softcore’ and ‘Cloned’ will run simultaneously from 28th April- 13th May. Opening times Tuesday – Saturday, 11am-4pm.

Meanwhile, here’s a funny little thing I made. Encouraging children to smoke by means of creating cuddly rolling tobacco. So irresponsible.

Lucy Sparrow is more known for her light-hearted cynical tapestries and soft sculptures which humorously comment on the darker taboos of society. For this special exhibition, she has taken on one of the biggest killer of any psychological illness as her subject matter. Having suffered with Anorexia for 13 years, she finally decided to tackle the subject that has plagued her for over half her life. ‘The Art Of Falling Apart’ is a series of ethereal and often mystical tapestries that convey the feeling of isolation and complete separation that the disease puts upon the sufferer. Whilst freezing out all those who they love around them, inside the anger, rage and fight inside still burns away, hotter and more ferocious than ever. A still mostly misunderstood illness, it becomes almost impossible to translate the reality of it without touching on the superficial side that so often becomes the main association with an illness where the sufferer is obsessed with losing weight. This obsession is not with looking good however, it is a need to disappear, it is slow suicide and the aim to make oneself as small and insignificant as humanly possible. It is punishment for imaginary sins that have never been committed. It’s a need to be clean on the inside as well as the outside and no matter how vigilant one can be, you will never scrub off the dirt and bad feeling that comes with this eternal shame. The tapestries are raw, biological, stripped of emotion. The eyes are dead and they show only specimens, no longer worthy of the title of human because to admit to being human means admitting to being needy, weak and dependent.

Founded by Charlotte Meddings and Corrina Eastwood, two women who have a wealth of experience working in the arts for many years, Sweet’Art has decided to launch with a show in aid of international women’s day.

International women’s day has been observed since in the early 1900′s, now held annually on the 8th of March, and brings together a global web of rich and diverse activity connecting women from all over the world.

A celebration of the achievements and contributions of women as well as a critique of the way in which women are perceived, shaped and contained within society, ‘#1’ is an exhibition where artists, regardless of gender, are invited to explore through any medium themes surrounding female form, female issues and the roles of women in today’s society.

Sweet’Art is dedicated to the promotion of art that is thought provoking, intelligent and challenging in its consideration of both aesthetic and concept. ‘#1’ as the launch show will reflect this in showcasing a range of work that follows a positive, feminist ethos with consideration of the way in which imagery representing women can so often be created in a context of negative conditions as determined by gender.

We are very pleased to announce that Show #1 will be located at The Crypt Gallery in St Pancras, London.

My knowledge of woodlice is very limited. There are videos of me munching on them as a child but after that, it’s as if they sought their psychological revenge by instilling the fear of God into me whenever they came near. I still sometimes have nightmares where I wake up and I’m writhing around in my bed trying to escape a herd of them from collectively giving birth to all their devil children on my pillow.

In order to confront my fear, I decided to make a felt woodlouse, complete with all its offspring in a convenient zippable womb. My experiment didn’t work. The fear is still there and so are the nightmares.

It’s that time of year again folks when all the weird and wonderful get herded into a gallery by Guerrilla Zoo to show off their art.
